I love the new fencing

So I have invested in PermaNet and ElectroNet fencing from Premier after having an escape from wire fencing. The first type is tall and sturdy but heavy and I'm not that tall so it is harder to install (although I can still get 4 rolls out in 30 mins alone) the second type is lighter and a breeze to put out. Last night I moved a paddock I had made for the 3 boys and put it up in a new place. The whole thing took 10 minutes of my time. 3 rolls of fencing and a good size area. Wonderful.

This morning they liked the new pasture. I like the view from my deck. Of course all of this has to come down soon as I want to put my sheep into their breeding groups. They are all ready to go lol. The wonderful thing about the fencing is that I have more time to do other things like tying practice.

We have a local show next Saturday and this will be our first time showing against other shetlands. The haltering practice is going really well even our new lamb Colby is doing well for a first timer although she's not showing this time out.

Sunny says thanks for the new grass.

  1. I don't have the portable fencing but I do use step in posts and electric wire to do the same thing. It gives you SO much more area that you can use for grazing. AND less mowing....

  2. Yes. I found with the non-electric fence that the sheep would rub against it until the wire was bent and then they would crawl underneath. We made the police report in out local paper once and then went with the electric lol. I love the ease of just putting up the paddocks and being able to move them quickly.

  3. Hi, followed your comment on my blog over to your blog. If you don't mind I'll be adding it to my favorites. :) I LOVE reading about other peoples animals, especially Shetlands! I have been looking at that Premier fencing...I may have to break down and get some so I can utilize my sheep better. That Colby is a cutie!

  4. Hi and that would be great :) I love to read about other shetlands as well. You have so many wonderful animals, very cute. Thanks Colby is very cute and I think she might actually stay shaela which would be great, her fleece is super soft. I always look forward to seeing them grow up.

  5. Colby is a cutie, where did you get her? I LOVE my portable electric fence netting. I have some from Kencove and Premier. Premeier's is a little more durable, but sometimes when one is out it is good to know a backup supplier. I also bought the battery charger with the solar panel that has given me a lot of flexibility.

  6. Hey Kara, Colby is from a friend in Bolton MA (Hythe Farms) who I got Sabrina and Hermione from as well. We traded as I had too many ram lambs this year and she had a lot of ewes. She knows I like spots lol and Colby should have that ability. Plus her fleece is really nice.

Next year (or some time later) I want a white flecket with moorit patches ewe lamb. Don't know how long that will take to find but I'm not in a rush. I'm trying to keep my flock to 10 and I think I will end up selling Hermione next year as I already have 1 light grey.

  7. I have a white and moorit flecket ewe lamb that I will put in a breeding group this year, and her mother too. If I get one, you will be the first to know. I'll meet you halfway. Maybe we can even make a trade. :)

  8. Oh that would be really good. Are you in the voluntary scrapie program?

I'm breeding 2 rams this year. Dreamer with Jewel and Amelia so I should have black hst's and greys. Sunny with Gypsy and and Sabrina so some good moorits with spots too. Crossing my fingers for ewes.
